Origin
Varamin rugs come from the eponymous town of Varamin (also spelled Waramin) in Tehran Province in central Iran. The town lies about 35 kilometres south-east of the capital Tehran and has been a major centre of Persian rug knotting for centuries. The region belongs to the traditional production areas for high-quality Persian rugs and has a long history in rug-making reaching back to the Middle Ages.
Characteristics
Varamin rugs are distinguished by their characteristic geometric patterns and the use of Mina KhaniMina KhaniAllover-Muster aus rautenförmig angeordneten Blüten mit kleinen Zwischenblüten. The traditional palette covers dark grounds such as navy blue, dark red, and black, complemented by lighter accents in beige, white, and pink.
The borders mostly show several narrow bands with geometric or floral motifs. Varamin rugs typically have a dense, firm weave with knot density between 160,000 and 300,000 knots per square metre. The pile is mostly medium-high and gives the rugs a pleasant feel.
Material and technique
Varamin rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality sheep's wool, with both warp and weft cotton. The wool mostly comes from local sheep and is traditionally dyed with natural dyes, though chrome-fast synthetic dyes are also used today. Knotting follows the Persian (Senneh) knot, known for its firmness and precision.
The weavers of Varamin are known for their precise work and even tension in knotting. After completion the rugs are sheared and washed, gaining their characteristic silken sheen. Producing a medium-sized Varamin rug takes several months depending on knot density.
Worth knowing
Varamin rugs were already highly valued by European collectors in the 19th century and were regularly exported to Europe and America. The town of Varamin is also known for its other craft traditions, particularly textile and ceramic production.
In the 1970s rug production in Varamin saw a particular upswing, when American importers showed great interest in the dark, geometric patterns. Today Varamin rugs are made both by local family operations and in larger workshops, with traditional patterns and techniques largely preserved.
Frequently asked questions
How does a Varamin differ from other Persian rugs?
Varamin rugs are particularly recognisable by their characteristic Mina Khani patterns and dark colour scheme. They have denser knotting than many other Persian rugs from the Tehran region and mostly show geometric rather than floral main patterns.
Are Varamin rugs durable?
Yes — thanks to high knot density, the use of high-quality materials, and the firm knotting technique, Varamin rugs are very hard-wearing and can last for generations with good care.
What sizes are typical for Varamin rugs?
Varamin rugs are knotted in various sizes, from small runners to large room rugs. Particularly common are formats of 2 × 3 metres and 3 × 4 metres, but runners and smaller formats are also regularly produced.
How do I care for a Varamin rug properly?
Varamin rugs should be vacuumed regularly and occasionally cleaned professionally. Thanks to their dark colours they are relatively easy to care for and show dirt less prominently than light rugs.
