Origin
Bidjar Zanjan rugs come from the area around the town of Zanjan in the eponymous province in north-western Persia. These rugs are a regional variant of the famous Bidjar weaving tradition. Zanjan lies strategically on historical trade routes and has a centuries-old tradition of rug-making. The town and its surroundings are known for their craft expertise, reflected in the special quality of the rugs woven there.
Characteristics
Bidjar Zanjan rugs are distinguished by their exceptionally dense and firm structure, which has earned them the nickname "iron rugs". The patterns are mostly geometric or show stylised floral motifs with a central medallion on monochrome or high-contrast patterned fields. Typical colours are deep reds, navy blue, ivory, and various browns. Borders often feature several narrow bands with geometric or floral motifs. Knot density usually lies between 200,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre.
Material and technique
These rugs are knotted exclusively from high-quality sheep's wool, with both warp and weft cotton. The wool mostly comes from the region and is dyed with both natural and chrome-fast synthetic dyes. Characteristic is the special weaving technique in which the weft thread is pulled especially tightly after each row of knots, producing the extreme density and firmness. Pile height is relatively low, producing a smooth, even surface. This technique makes the rugs particularly hard-wearing and durable.
Worth knowing
Bidjar Zanjan rugs are considered an especially value-stable investment thanks to their exceptional durability. The extreme density makes them so heavy that they are difficult to roll — they are often transported folded, without taking damage. In the Zanjan region both traditional patterns and modern adaptations of classical Persian rugs are woven. Production is mainly home-based, with knowledge of the special weaving technique passed down across generations.
Frequently asked questions
Why are Bidjar Zanjan rugs called "iron rugs"?
The nickname comes from the exceptionally firm and dense weaving technique. The rugs are so tightly woven that they are extremely heavy and almost indestructible — recalling the hardness of iron.
How do Bidjar Zanjan rugs differ from other Bidjar rugs?
Bidjar Zanjan rugs often show region-specific colour combinations and pattern variations. They may show slight deviations in knot density and the wool quality used but retain the characteristic firm structure.
Are Bidjar Zanjan rugs suitable for heavy use?
Yes — thanks to their extreme density and firmness they count among the most hard-wearing rugs there are. They are excellent for high-traffic areas and retain their form and quality even after decades of use.
How can the authenticity of a Bidjar Zanjan rug be verified?
Authentic Bidjar Zanjan rugs are exceptionally heavy and firm. The back shows a very dense, even knot structure. The characteristic weight and special stiffness are clear identifying features, hard to imitate.
