Origin
Indo Kashan rugs are knotted in India and follow the design model of the classical Persian Kashan rugs. Production focuses primarily on the northern Indian rug centres, where experienced knotters have adapted the traditional patterns and techniques. This Indian interpretation of the Kashan style emerged as part of the broad rug production that has developed in India over centuries.
Characteristics
Indo Kashan rugs are distinguished by their symmetrical, geometrically built designs. The centre is usually dominated by a large medallion, surrounded by smaller ornamental elements. The traditional palette runs between deep red and blue as ground colours, complemented by cream, beige, and gold accents.
Borders are multi-tiered and typically show floral motifs or geometric ornaments. Characteristic is the very richly detailed execution with fine lines and precise patterns. Knot density mostly lies between 250,000 and 400,000 knots per square metre, allowing very fine rendering of complex designs.
Material and technique
The base material is high-quality wool for the pile, while the warp is mostly cotton. The knotting technique follows the asymmetrical Senneh knot, which produces a particularly dense and even structure.
The wool is sorted carefully before processing and frequently dyed with synthetic dyes that ensure even, lightfast colouring. After knotting, the rugs are sheared, washed, and often given a chemical post-treatment that intensifies the sheen and harmonises the colours.
Worth knowing
Indo Kashan rugs emerged as a commercial response to demand for the classical Kashan design alongside more economical production. The Indian manufactories have developed their own interpretations that differ from the original Persian models in colour scheme and detail execution.
Quality varies considerably between makers. High-quality Indo Kashan rugs achieve a knot quality very close to the Persian originals, while simpler versions are noticeably more coarsely knotted. The size range is impressive, from small runners to room-filling formats above 300 × 400 cm.
Frequently asked questions
How do Indo Kashan rugs differ from Persian Kashan rugs?
Indo Kashan rugs are Indian interpretations of the classical Persian design. They differ mainly in colour intensity, wool quality, and often in knot density. The patterns are similar but usually less nuanced in execution.
What quality differences are there among Indo Kashan rugs?
Quality varies strongly between makers. High-quality pieces have knot densities of 350,000–400,000 knots/m² and use fine wool, while simpler versions only show 200,000–250,000 knots/m² and use coarser wool.
Are Indo Kashan rugs suitable for daily use?
Yes — high-quality Indo Kashan rugs are very hard-wearing and well suited to living spaces with normal use. The dense knotting and robust wool quality make them durable floor coverings.
How do I care for Indo Kashan rugs properly?
Regular vacuuming in the pile direction and professional cleaning every 3–5 years are recommended. For stains, blot immediately with clear water and a clean cloth. Direct sunlight should be avoided to prevent colour change.
